June is here already and besides school letting out and farmers markets starting up again, we have so much here at EVOO to look forward to. We start serving lunch again. Yes, JUNE 1, 2009 is the first day of FAMILY MEAL! We are once again opening our staff meal to the public! And we eat very well! Weekdays at 1 o’clock, while it lasts! We have more seating on our deck this summer so can accommodate many during lunch! Show up and join us!

We have new outdoor seating this year! We did a careful search for the right fit for our deck. For the past summers, our deck furniture took a beating from the weather and the hauling in and out of the building. The new bar height tables & chairs are made from “poly lumber,” a sustainably manufactured product from recycled plastics. They are indestructible so they claim. We’ll soon see. Meantime, it is so comfy that we think you will enjoy taking a long lunch with one of our cheese boards, Bob’s daily bread, and a bottle of wine!

We have two spaces left in our VEGETARIAN FUNDAMENTALS class June 9, 10. Classes start at 9 and end 4:00 first day and 2:00 the second for 12 hours of hands-on instruction. Learn how eating vegetarian, full time or part-time, can improve your health and budget! We want to show you how easily you can make a plant-based meal without missing the chew and mouth-feel that animal proteins provide. We will explore soy products, grain meats, nuts, seeds, and milks of rice, soy and almond. There is more to grain than rice as we explore quinoa, buckwheat groats, and barley. And we’ll make list of a few (hundred) recipes to use up our garden zucchini too!

FARMERS MARKET is starting JUNE 16, 2:00 to 6:00, through SEPT 29 with 23 farms, good music, and community fun. We are the first restaurant of the week opening day, and will be serving Bob’s pulled pork sliders made from OK Ranch pork. We are also planning to serve strawberry shortcake with the first of the season’s berries!

Our full summer schedule is up and we now have four opportunities a week for you to dine with us in the evening. Tuesdays we host MARKET DINNERS where we prepare what we find at the market that day. It is $59 including wine and a portion of the fee goes back to the CBFM fund for next year. Thursday, Friday and Saturday we offer The DINNER SHOW, 7-9:30 PM, with three entrees paired with wines and a great dessert for $89 inclusive.

August 14, 2009 marks EVOO’s 5th ANNIVERSARY! We are proud to still be offering friends and guests our brand of hospitality and hope to continue for another five. To show our appreciation for guest loyalty, we dreamed up an incentive program.

You see we want to reward those who come back often and encourage everyone to do the same. If you are a customer who has been to EVOO at least once a year (5 times or more), you are what we call FAMILY. Those who have come to at least 3 of our classes are true FANS. Anyone who has come 1-2 times qualifies as ENCORE member, in the FRIENDS category.

When you see our new homepage, look for the EVOO ENCORE icon. Go there and insert yourself in the category that fits. Fill in all the fields. Then let us take it from there. Opportunities, coupons, discounts, parties, privileges and recipes will be coming your way.

When you sign in, you automatically receive an email that gives you a link to confirm and open the door for receiving rewards.

FRENCH TOAST ON THE DECK is back up this month too. If you have been to our Omelet classes you know our French toast walks on its own! We are preparing it outside while you watch and you can have it plain or with the works, i.e., berries and cream! It’s on every Saturday and Sunday 9-Noon through Labor Day. Great idea too for Dad’s day, June 21.

SANDCASTLE 2009 is on June 13, and the Chamber of Commerce sponsored event promises to be bigger than ever. Wednesday June 10, there is a demonstration class on creating sand castles — they are depicting a giant rendering of Gulliver napping on the sand. The whole town is to turn out for an official picture with Gulliver that evening before the tides wash it away. See cannonbeach.net for more.

Some of the businesses in town are competing this year in Sandcastle, and there are friendly lines being drawn in the sand as we write. Pun intended. There will be a concert in the park behind the visitors’ center after the judging on Saturday.

During the day, there will be several “ambassadors” in yellow caps roving the beach to answer visitor’s questions. They are also handing out coupon books for genuine bargains back in town. Here is our coupon—but it must come from the booklets which are free!

Then back at EVOO starting around 12 noon Saturday, June 13, we are dishing up our version of yummy SAND CASTLE CAKES. They are made from “sand” (pecan sandies) and “dirt,” (crushed oreos), and one is a scene of Haystack at low tide and the other a scene of traditional “sandies” castles! Made with pudding and whipped cream and cake, of course, they are sure to appeal to children of all ages who may shovel up a plate for $2.50 and $4.00, depending on the size of the shovel. Parents of children under 12 must be present.

Oh yeah, new to our EVOO family is Chad Karver, our culinary intern, here this summer completing his course of study from WESTERN CULINARY INSTITUTE in Portland. He has moved into our bedroom studio down stairs and is working his mmm off this summer, right along with Bob working his mmm off too. Chad is fun and quick learner who seems to pick up the ways of the kitchen quickly. Hopefully he is learning all our best kitchen moves to become a super candidate for culinary work in the FALL.
